Cardiff City's claim for over £100 million in compensation following the death of footballer Emiliano Sala has been rejected by a French court. The 28-year-old Argentine and pilot David Ibbotson died when the Piper Malibu aircraft they were traveling in crashed into the English Channel on the night of January 21, 2019.
At the time, the striker was en route to join Cardiff, then a Premier League side, after a £15 million transfer from Nantes.
In the latest development of a long-running dispute, a French court, tasked with determining whether the Welsh club was entitled to compensation from Nantes for Sala's loss, dismissed the claim.
Cardiff had sought over €120 million (£104 million) for lost profits and other damages, based on the belief that Sala could have helped the club retain its place in England's top flight.
However, on Monday, the Nantes court rejected the Welsh club's claims and ordered them to pay approximately £400,000 for legal costs and non-pecuniary damages incurred by FC Nantes.
