The 22-year-old star has found his feet with his new club, having started the last two Dutch Eredivisie games for the league leaders from start to finish.

Bassey continued his impressive start to life at Ajax as he helped the Alfred Schreuder-led side to a 2-0 victory over FC Utrecht on Sunday afternoon.

Calvin Bassey to play centre-back for Ajax

Schreuder named the Super Eagles star to partner Jurrien Timber in the centre-back positions, having featured in the same role for the Dutch champions in last week's 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam.

In Schreuder's post-match press conference as reported by wetalkajax, the Ajax manager pointed out that Bassey played in the same position while he was at Rangers.

The Ajax manager noted: “With Rangers he played 12-14 games [as a CB]. He can do well there and has a good pass, but the spaces were tight.

"It comes down to precision and recognizing the moments. We could’ve gone more through Daley. Still improvement needed, but it’s normal."

Despite starting his career as a left-back, the former Leicester City U23 star has proven capable in the centre-back position, playing regularly in that position for Rangers during the 2021/22 season.

Bassey was reportedly signed to replace new Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez who left Ajax during this summer transfer in a €67m deal.

The Super Eagles star will hope to make his home league debut at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday, September 3 when they face SC Cambuur in the Matchday 5 fixture of the 2022/23 Eredivisie season.
