Enyimba fall 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in 2nd group game of CAF Confederation Cup
Nigeria's sole representative in the 2021 CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba FC, have lost their second group game by 2-1 against South African side, Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.
The Aba Elephants went into the match on the back of their 2-1 victory over Libyan side, Al-Ahly Benghazi in the opening game of the group stage.
Enyimba had a slow start as they chose to sit back with the hope of catching Pirates on the counter.
Orlando Pirates inevitably took advantage to dominate possession but the South Africans failed to create goal scoring chances in the early exchanges.
As both teams settled into the game, Enyimba began to make series of errors as they try to hit on the counter.
The first chance of the game fell to Pirates on 13th minute when Enyimba goalkeeper, John Noble, fumbled a cross sent into the box but the South Africans failed to capitalise.
On 23rd minute, Enyimba lost possession in their own half, again Orlando Pirates failed to make use of it.
The deadlock was finally broken on the 27th minute.
Noble, who has been a suspect all night, was again the culprit as he spilled a cross onto the path of Mntambo, who sent a downward header to Hotto who finished with a sublime backheel with the goalkeeper off his line.
The goal seemed to shake the Aba boys awaken as they went all out in search of an equaliser.
Enyimba captain, Augustine Oladapo, saw his free-kick went agonisingly off the bar from 25 yards out on the 30th minute.
Two minutes later, Enyimba winger, Emmanuel, was presented with a wonderful opportunity on the edge of the box with only the goalkeeper to beat but his lame effort was easily gathered by Pirates goalie.
Another chance arrived for Enyimba on the 42nd minute, this time Obi Samson failed to convert as he blasted his shot well over the crossbar.
As the South Africans looked to close out the half, Enyimba kept applying pressure and were rewarded for their persistence on the stroke of half time when Pirates goalkeeper Mpontshane, hacked down Anayo who was through on goal and the referee pointed to the spot.
Oladapo stepped up to convert cooly by sending Mpontshane the wrong way to ensure the first half ended 1-1.
Just as in the first half, Enyimba allowed Orlando Pirates to control the game in the second half.
The South Africans should have regained the lead in the 55th minute when Hotto sent in a low cross to Pule who forced a good save from Noble in the Enyimba goal.
A minute later, Pirates were awarded a free-kick from 25 yards out after Enyimba defender, Hassan fouled Pule. Mntambo took the free kick, but his shot sailed inches away from the target.
On 58th minute, Pirates Coach, Zinnbauer, made a double change, as Kabelo Dlamini comes on for Ben Motshwari, while Mntambo makes way for Tshegofatso Mabasa.
As the game wore on, the Nigerians looked tired and struggled to get out of their half largely due to the high pressing by Orlando Pirates.
Three minutes after coming on, Mabasa nearly put his team in front with a shot from inside the box.
The Bucs were awarded a penalty on the 74th minute when Mhango was fouled in the box but Mabasa sent the ball over the bar after a nasty slip.
Mabasa however, made up for his miss when he headed in a corner on 89th minute to put Pirates in the lead.
Enyimba couldn't react as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.
The win sent Orlando Pirates to the top of Group A with four points having played a goalless draw against ES Setif in the opening match.
Enyimba with three points trail in second place pending the outcome of the other game between Al Ahli and ES Setif.
The Aba Elephants will face ES Setif in their next game as they hope to make it out of the group.
