The Board of Administration of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF) has approved Sofia as the candidate city to host a round of the Men's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in 2028. The matches are scheduled to take place from May 20–24 at Arena Sofia.
The decision forms part of Bulgaria's strategic push to secure a quota for the 2028 Olympic Games. The Volleyball Nations League carries major weight in the FIVB World Rankings, which are vital for Olympic qualification. Staging a preliminary round on home soil will provide the national team with crucial home-court advantage during a pivotal qualification window.
The Board also confirmed Burgas as the host city for a Men's VNL round in 2027. Bulgaria will stage the Week 2 pool matches, scheduled for June 18–27. In preparation for the event, plans are in place to expand Arena Burgas' capacity from 6,300 to 7,300 seats.
Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting domestic clubs by continuing to cover all officiating and referee fees.
During the meeting, the Referees Commission praised the constructive working relationship with BVF President Lyubomir Ganev and the Board, highlighting the independent environment established for their operations. Commission representatives underlined the importance of this partnership in achieving their long-term objectives and driving the development of volleyball officiating in Bulgaria.
