Bruno Fernandes Rejects Manchester United's Initial Contract Offer

Manchester United is reportedly looking to extend the contract of their midfielder and captain, Bruno Fernandes, according to The Athletic. Various sources suggest the Portuguese international has rejected the club's initial offer. It's understood that the Old Trafford hierarchy proposed an increase of just £500,000 on his current £19.5 million annual salary. However, it remains unclear whether the financial terms were the sole reason for his refusal, or if the midfielder has set other conditions for committing his long-term future to the club. The 31-year-old playmaker might be seeking assurances regarding the club's ambition to compete for trophies or specific demands concerning transfer policy, which would be subject to future negotiations. Furthermore, Fernandes's £57 million release clause for foreign clubs has also expired.

The midfielder joined Manchester United in January 2020, with the club paying Sporting Lisbon €65 million for his services. Last season, Fernandes featured in 37 matches across all competitions, netting nine goals and providing 22 assists. His current contract with the club runs until the summer of 2027, but it includes a clause allowing the Red Devils to unilaterally extend his deal until the summer of 2028, placing the club in a relatively strong negotiating position. Turkish giants Galatasaray have shown interest in the player, with several media outlets reporting that the Istanbul club offered Bruno Fernandes a contract worth €20 million per season. However, Manchester United has reportedly deemed the Portuguese star non-transferable.
