Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes questioned manager Michael Carrick following one of the most humiliating European nights in the club's history. A crushing 4-1 Champions League defeat away to Como has cast serious doubt over the manager's future at the helm.
Following the final whistle, Carrick walked past his own players to apologise to the 700 travelling supporters who had made the trip to Italy, raising his hands in an admission of guilt. The gesture drew striking parallels to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reaction after the 4-1 capitulation against Watford in November 2021, which resulted in the Norwegian's sacking just 24 hours later.
Fernandes, known for his tactical astuteness and relentless analysis of the game, did not hold back his criticism while speaking to TNT Sports directly after the match.
"The coaching staff's decision was not to press man-to-man, to leave space behind us, and to try to win the ball back that way. But when you give that much possession to teams like this, you give them confidence," the Portuguese midfielder said.
Asked whether Carrick got his tactical setup wrong for the match, the playmaker added:
"That is for the manager and his staff to evaluate, not me. In certain moments under pressure, you need more courage—to take risks, press high, and put them on the back foot."
During his post-match press conference, Carrick was informed of his captain's comments and delivered a blunt response:
"Whatever system you use and whatever tactics you set up, if you don't run—both forward and backward—you simply cannot win."
The Red Devils boss firmly dismissed questions regarding his job security, shifting his focus entirely to the dismal performance and the apology owed to the supporters.
Carrick stressed that the performance was completely unacceptable, falling well short of Manchester United's standards and values. He added that while he always approaches the travelling fans after games, on this occasion he wanted to show empathy for their frustration following a turbulent run of results in recent weeks.
"There were so many thoughts running through my mind watching that unfold," admitted Carrick, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his playing days at United. "It was extremely painful to watch."
"To be completely honest, it wasn't just about the goals we conceded, but the manner of them and our body language on the pitch at key moments," the manager added.
"I give absolutely everything at all times because this club truly matters to me. My entire life is invested in this cause. Sometimes things go your way, other times they don't, but I pour every ounce of myself into this job."
