Brazilian Fans Outraged After Federation's Appeal

The Brazilian Football Confederation publicly reacted to the national team's elimination from the 2026 World Cup, and the subsequent fan response was anything but mild. The controversy stemmed from a video clip published by the federation regarding the team's performance at the tournament, which ended in the Round of 16.

A week after their Round of 16 exit from the World Cup against Norway, the Federation urged the Brazilian people not to forget that date, calling it "the day the national team's next journey begins." The governing body attempted to defuse tensions, hoping to quickly move past the traumatic recent past and direct fans' attention towards the 2030 World Cup, where the "Seleção" have set their sights on a sixth world title.

The video, just over a minute long, aimed to stand in solidarity with Brazilian supporters.

"It wasn't easy to write the script for this film because we know how you feel. That this tunnel seems endless, that the sixth title never comes. We cannot forget this loss, because it will take us where we want to go," a segment of the video states.

The core message then becomes clear: "We will give our all – not just our talent, but also more stability, more planning, and much more hard work. And in four years, my friends, get ready, because we will be even stronger in pursuit of that sixth star."

Negative Reactions

Within an hour of its release, the video garnered predominantly negative comments due to its lack of creative messaging and its attempt to lift the spirits of an already wounded football nation. "This video is an awfully bad decision," wrote one user on X, "not to mention the extremely generic and impersonal aesthetic."

"This is one of the worst videos I've ever seen," another user commented, while a third added: "Another video to mask the loss." The fact that artificial intelligence was used to create the clip also drew criticism: "A minute-long video packed with AI, meant to symbolize some message" and "a video made almost entirely with AI to create a sense of belonging to a team that spends most of its cycle away from the country," were some of the remarks.

Brazil lost the match against Norway after two goals from Haaland, and Neymar's late penalty proved insufficient for a comeback. With their last title won in 2002, Brazil will endure at least 28 years until a potential next triumph – the country has never waited this long between two World Cup titles.

It wasn't easy to write the script for this film because we know how you feel. That this tunnel seems endless, that the sixth title never comes. Giving up has never been in the Brazilian spirit, much less hanging our heads. But we also cannot forget this loss, because it will take us where we want to go. And we will never forget our fans – in the stadium, in Brazil, and across all corners of the world. So let's remember this date, July 5, 2026. The day our next journey begins. We will give our all – not just our talent, but also more stability, more planning, and much more hard work. And in four years, my friends, get ready, because we will be even stronger in pursuit of that sixth star. You can believe in that.
