KK Bosna could be on the verge of one of the most unexpected European comebacks this summer.
According to information circulating in basketball circles, the Sarajevo club is reportedly in discussions to participate in the EuroCup. The Students haven't competed in this tournament since the 2007/2008 season.
This unexpected opportunity has arisen due to a complete financial and organizational crisis at Monaco. The French champions had already lost their spot in the EuroLeague and were subsequently relegated to the EuroCup.
However, Monaco's participation in the EuroCup is now also in question. It's worth remembering that Monaco was denied a license to compete in the top tier of French basketball, and their appeal to play in the second division was also rejected. The club failed to submit the necessary financial documentation within the stipulated deadline and is now attempting to salvage its season through an appeal. This precarious situation has cast doubt on their European status as well.
Bosna's return to the EuroCup would be a significant development for Bosnian and Herzegovinian basketball. The former European champions would once again host some of the continent's most renowned clubs, bringing top-tier basketball to Sarajevo throughout the autumn and winter.
Simultaneously, the club would face an extremely demanding financial and organizational challenge.
The new EuroCup season will feature an expanded format with 32 teams, divided into four groups of eight participants each. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. From the Round of 16 through to the finals, series will be played in a best-of-three format.
