Shekau reacted to the recent US elections which saw the emergence of Donald Trump as President-elect.

Shekau’s comments are surprising because he no longer enjoys the support and power he used to before being demoted by the Islamic State (ISIS) in August.

ISIS announced in August that it was replacing Shekau with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, the 22-year-old son of Boko Haram's founder Mohammed Yusuf.

Shekau however rejected the appointment and said that he had been deceived by ISIS which he pledged allegiance to in March 2015.
