Body calls time at 25: The heartbreak of the Olympic star whose career was cut short by injury
At just 25 years old and with two Olympic appearances to her name, Christina Foedermayr has decided to hang up her skis for good. The Austrian ski cross athlete, who has fought grueling battles against severe injuries over recent seasons, took to social media to announce the end of her competitive career in an emotional open letter to fans.
Despite her precocious talent—becoming a team junior world champion in 2021 and claiming individual bronze the following year—her career was repeatedly derailed by misfortune. In December 2023 at the Swiss resort of Arosa, Foedermayr secured her career-best World Cup finish, but the day ended in a nightmare: a heavy crash resulted in partial tears to both the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her left knee.
Although she managed to battle back in time to represent her country at the Winter Olympics in Beijing (2022) and Livigno (2026), finishing 22nd in both editions, the physical and mental toll ultimately prompted her decision to step away.
"For most of my life, this was all I knew. For a long time, I thought there would always be more. But life has a way of teaching you that you can give everything you have and still not be in control of what happens around you. I gave this sport everything within my power to give," the Austrian skier confessed.
Refusing to dwell on regrets, the young athlete preferred to focus on resilience and the cherished memories she built on the snow.
"I don't want to think about what could have been. I want to remember what was: the places, the people, the battles, the highs and lows. The moments when I thought I'd never make it back, and the moments that made every second worth it. What a ride. And my God... it was so beautiful. Thank you, skiing!" she concluded.
