Big Brother Naija is a reality show that is not only interesting to follow on television, but also on Twitter.
On Twitter, viewers and critics of the show get to discuss the show, share their thoughts on the actions of the housemates, have different opinions and argue about it.
Using the Python programming language, Makanjuola Ogunleye Dickson and Miracle Olorundare, both graduate students at Austin Peay State University, USA, analyzed the Big Brother Naija show using the Twitter hashtag #Bbnaija.
Connecting to twitter using twitter streaming API, they were able to gather 580,000 tweets. For the analysis, they focused on specific parameters such as: tweets made within the last few weeks, locations the tweets came from, dates each tweet was made, and username of the tweeters.
At the end, they were able to answer the following questions:
How tweeters are distributed by location
Based on the 20 areas they created for the research, Lagos had the highest contribution on #BBnaija. Other countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and Ivory Coast, also had good online engagement for the show.
Top contestant by popularity on twitter
From their research, the most talked about housemates were Cee-C, followed by Miracle, and then Tobi.
Number of tweets that contain each contestant
For every tweet made by twitter users, Cee-C appeared most, followed by Miracle, and then Tobi.
The difference between this result and the above mentioned is that they counted each tweet that contained each contestant, regardless of the number of times the contestant was mentioned per tweet.
Top tweeters and their location
They were able to infer from their research analysis that @tweetoracle tweeted the most about BBnaija. He was followed by @bbnaija, @kuukuafouillard among others.
The sentiments around each contestant
Sentiment Analysis is the process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in a piece of text, especially to determine whether the writer's attitude towards a particular topic is positive, negative, or neutral.
In this research, every tweet around a contestant was categorized into either positive, negative or neutral sentiments. This was to determine contestants who have little or more love from fans.
Tobi was the housemate with the highest positive. Cee-C, even with a high positive, had the highest negative. However, Miracle had a high positive, low negative, and more tweets compared to Tobi.
The season came to an end on April 22, with Miracle as the winner, Cee-Cas the first runner-up, Tobi as the second runner-up, and Alexand Nina taking the fourth and fifth spot, respectively.
