Berbatov: Šeško Strikes Fear into Opponents

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes current center-forward Benjamin Šeško strikes fear into opposing teams. The summer signing from RB Leipzig faced unfair criticism early in his tenure but has enjoyed an exceptional 2026 so far, even winning the club's Player of the Month award for February. Despite playing a full 90 minutes only once since Michael Carrick took charge – in the 2-1 loss to Newcastle – the Slovenian international has climbed to the top of the club's scoring charts, sharing the lead with Bryan Mbeumo. He has eight goals in his last 11 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils, and Berbatov is visibly impressed with what he's seeing from the 22-year-old.

“He possesses all the necessary qualities right now; everything is working well for him,” Berbatov stated during his appearance on the club's official podcast, “Inside Carrington.”

“I hope he continues in the same vein. I think things are going well for him at the moment, and slowly but surely, everything is falling into place. I prefer it that way. I want him to slowly but surely build that confidence, to score goals, because the two are connected. When you score, you gain confidence. He's finding his place in the team, but even when he's on the bench, his mere presence on the field poses a threat and instills fear in the opponent, and that also leads to goals,” the Bulgarian added.

“It's great to see him come off the bench and sometimes score. Or he starts and still scores. Honestly, I don't care what kind of goals he scores, as long as the ball hits the back of the net. Until you build that confidence, you know that when you step onto the pitch, goals are guaranteed,” Berba continued.

The Blagoevgrad native, who scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for the Red Devils between 2008 and 2012, is a fan of the way Carrick has got the team playing since taking over as head coach earlier this year.

“I think the team is playing really, really good football. And it's truly a pleasure to watch. Every time you tell yourself that we can do more because we are in third place, if I'm not mistaken. So, here we are. I think the credit goes to the entire team. It's easy to point out this or that player, and you can immediately say Bruno [Fernandes], Casemiro, Šeško with the goals he's scoring, [Matheus] Cunha. The credit goes to everyone; it wouldn't be fair to the whole team. As a team, they suddenly started playing for each other. It's as if, when you look left, back, forward, you want to play for yourself and for the team. They achieved that synchronicity on the field. Now it's pure pleasure; when I watch, I say to myself, 'Oh, my God.' Keep it up, lads! Bruno's assists, Šeško's goals, Casemiro's fire to win the ball. The defense has also improved. Everything is flowing smoothly and freely right now, and I hope we see more of that until the end of the season,” Berbatov concluded.
