Ben Askren is set to make a wrestling comeback.
Representatives for Real American Freestyle confirmed to mmafighting.com that Askren will face Belal Muhammad in a bout at the RAF 11 event. The fight night is scheduled for July 18th at the Panther Arena in Milwaukee.
His return to the sport comes over a year after a severe battle with pneumonia, which necessitated a double lung transplant and nearly cost him his life. After nearly two months in the hospital, Askren was able to return home, where he continued to improve his health. Now, the fighter nicknamed "Funky" will make his RAF debut – a promotion where he has been one of the matchmakers since its inception less than a year ago.
Muhammad will be making his second appearance in the organization, seeking his first RAF victory after losing to David Carr via technical knockout at RAF 4 last December. The former UFC welterweight title contender is also set to compete in the Octagon this Saturday against Gabriel Bonfim in the main event of UFC Vegas 118, hoping to snap a two-fight losing streak.
