The Denver Nuggets pulled off the biggest move of the offseason by landing six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan. However, few were aware that another NBA icon, Russell Westbrook, was the driving force behind the blockbuster signing.
Speaking at his introductory press conference in Colorado, DeRozan opened up about how conversations and guidance from his longtime friend ultimately convinced him to make Denver his new home.
"My close friend Russ reached out to Joker and asked about a few things even before it crossed my mind," DeRozan shared. "I did my own homework to get a true feel for the situation, but every conversation I had with the front office only reaffirmed my decision and made me feel completely confident."
Westbrook's Legacy and a New Chapter for DeRozan
Although he spent just one season in Denver (2024–25), the recently retired Russell Westbrook left an undeniable mark on the franchise. Thriving as a veteran leader off the bench and an ideal complement to Nikola Jokić, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game, guiding the Nuggets to a 50-win season and the brink of the Western Conference Finals.
Now, DeRozan is poised to step into a similar—if not even more pivotal—role. One of the most lethal midrange scorers of the modern era arrives in Denver following another prolific campaign with the Sacramento Kings (18.4 PPG), ready to channel his offensive firepower into team success alongside Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon.
"My mindset has always been about winning," DeRozan emphasized. "I want to go out there, compete, stay true to who I am, and help this team in every way possible. At the end of the day, it's the game I've loved since I was a kid. I'll do whatever it takes to win—that's all that matters to me."
By adding DeRozan, Denver has secured a proven clutch performer and another high-caliber weapon in their pursuit of the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
