Maycon Cardozo, Bayern Munich's new rising star, faces a major decision in his international career, with a choice to make between representing Portugal or Brazil.
The 17-year-old's club future is secure, having signed a long-term youth contract with the Bavarians even before his professional debut. However, his international path remains uncertain.
The talented winger became the first player to break into the Bavarian giants' first team from their FC Bayern World Squad talent development project. The attacker made his Bundesliga debut on March 6th in a 4-1 victory against Borussia M'Gladbach and featured again last Saturday in the 4-0 win over Union Berlin.
Born in Brazil and raised in Thailand before moving to Munich, the young athlete holds dual Brazilian and Portuguese nationality, making him eligible to represent both national teams. According to the newspaper Bild, Cardozo's dream is to play for Brazil.
However, despite his strong performances, his country of birth did not call him up for the Canarinhos' recent U-20 squad commitments. Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has reportedly shown "intense and prolonged" interest in the player.
So far, the 1.65-meter creative player has not made a decision, but it is clear that if Brazil does not make a concrete move, Portugal's chances of securing the player increase considerably. The final choice for a senior national team will only need to be made when the time comes to commit to the A-squad.
