After the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was left off the 2027 Formula 1 calendar due to a rotation deal with Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps, the Spanish circuit has found a major event to fill the void on its schedule.
According to Catalan outlet El Periódico, with subsequent confirmation from motorsport.com, Barcelona is set to host a round of the American IndyCar Series starting in the summer of 2027. An agreement between both parties has already been reached, and the contract is expected to be signed shortly.
This will mark IndyCar's first race outside North America since 2013, when the series last visited São Paulo. The last time an American open-wheel championship raced in Europe was in 2007, when Champ Car staged events at Zolder in Belgium and Assen in the Netherlands.
The complete IndyCar schedule has not yet been announced, with only the opening eight rounds confirmed so far. The last of those will take place in Detroit on June 6, just a week after the crown jewel of the series, the Indianapolis 500.
The prospective race in Barcelona will also serve as a homecoming for Alex Palou, who has dominated the series with multiple championship titles. Since 2021, the Spaniard has only missed out on the crown in 2022, when he finished fifth in the standings.
