Barcelona have issued an official statement after UEFA confirmed receipt of documentation from Real Madrid regarding the ongoing "Negreira case". The Catalan club firmly stressed that European football's governing body has not opened any new disciplinary proceedings against them.
"The proceedings were opened at the beginning of 2023 with the appointment of two inspectors, who have since carried out the actions they deemed necessary. The club has always complied with all of their requests. This investigation cannot be reopened because it was never closed," Barcelona stated in their official release.
Barcelona added that UEFA's letter merely acknowledges the receipt of documents submitted by Real Madrid, which will simply be reviewed within the scope of the existing inquiry. The statement highlighted that UEFA explicitly referred to the process as "ongoing" on two occasions. Therefore, there is no decision to initiate, reopen, or reactivate any case, nor has any position been taken on the merits or value of the submitted materials.
"To date, no new requests have been made to FC Barcelona, nor has the club been formally notified of Real Madrid's complaint. When that occurs, the club will respond in due course, as it has always done. Under applicable regulations, developments in this matter remain contingent on the outcome of the criminal proceedings currently underway in Spain," the statement concluded.
The Catalan giants also pointed out that since the investigation began, they have consistently been granted their UEFA licence and have competed uninterrupted in European competitions.
