Barcelona president Joan Laporta arrived in Dallas this Sunday, set to attend the Spain vs. France semi-final match of the 2026 World Cup. However, upon landing in the Texan city, he was quickly approached by several Spanish journalists, where he addressed one of the summer transfer window's biggest sagas.
Julián Álvarez is keen to leave Atlético Madrid this summer, and Barcelona could very well be his destination. Laporta confirmed that the Madrid club has an offer on the table for the player, who is currently with the Argentine national team.
"We won't be dancing to anyone's tune here; we'll set the rhythm ourselves. We've made an offer, and that offer isn't open-ended. In due course, we'll state how long the offer will remain valid. We are eager to sign a player who is highly regarded by both the board and the coaching staff. The offer is for a very significant amount, but its validity is not unlimited," Joan Laporta warned.
Barcelona's interest has already drawn several responses from the Colchoneros, who have even poked fun at their Catalan rivals. However, for Laporta, the relationship between the clubs remains stable, despite these occasional bumps.
"I believe we have a very good relationship. There was some confusion regarding the offer we made; we haven't pushed further. I simply told them that this offer stands. There have been no further developments since then," Laporta stated, effectively placing the ball in Atlético's court to resolve this impasse surrounding the future of the striker, whom Atleti signed from Manchester City two years ago for 75 million euros.
