Barça Boasts 12 World Champions, Eight More Eyeing Glory

Only a select group of Barcelona footballers have had the privilege of lifting the golden trophy while still playing for the Catalan club during the same season.

In its 96-year history, the World Cup has seen 22 editions, with only eight national teams managing to lift the coveted trophy. Brazil leads the pack with five titles, followed by Germany and Italy, each with four. Argentina boasts three championships, while Uruguay and France have two apiece. England and Spain complete the list with one title each, though both the "Albiceleste" and "La Roja" have the potential to expand their trophy cabinets.

Over 6,000 footballers have participated in a World Cup final phase since 1930. However, only a small fraction of them have had the honor of becoming world champions. This is an exclusive club, one that only twelve Barcelona players have managed to join while defending the "Blaugrana" colors. They are Barça's golden dozen.

The Glorious Champions

The first to etch his name into history was Romário. The Brazilian striker won the 1994 World Cup in the USA, defeating Italy in an unforgettable final decided by a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

Eight years later, it was Rivaldo's turn. Brazil reclaimed the world throne in Korea and Japan in 2002, beating Germany 2-0 in the final with two goals from Ronaldo Nazário. Rivaldo was one of the standout figures of that squad. He scored five goals, provided one assist, and was included in the tournament's All-Star Team. This World Cup marked a golden end to his tenure at Barça before he moved to AC Milan that same summer.

The largest representation from the "Blaugrana" came in South Africa in 2010. Spain secured their first World Cup title thanks to Andrés Iniesta's unforgettable goal in extra time against the Netherlands in the final. Eight Barça players lifted that World Cup: Iniesta, Xavi Hernández, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, David Villa, Pedro Rodríguez, and Víctor Valdés. All, except the latter, were starters in the final, forming part of a national team that forever changed the history of Spanish football.

The next World Champion from Barça arrived in Russia in 2018. France defeated Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling final, guaranteeing, regardless of the outcome, a new champion from the Catalan club. The French squad included Samuel Umtiti, a starter in the match, and Ousmane Dembélé, who had recently joined the club. Facing them was Ivan Rakitić, a key figure for the Croatian national team and also a starter in the final. The title was won by "Les Bleus," and Barça once again celebrated the fact that two of its players reached the pinnacle of world football.

The Magic of Eight

Since Brazil lifted the World Cup in 1994, it seems the number eight has been a recurring theme for Barça. Since that World Cup, at least one "Blaugrana" player has become a world champion every eight years. This happened with Romário in the USA in 1994, with Rivaldo in Korea and Japan in 2002, with the eight champions from South Africa in 2010, and with Umtiti and Dembélé in Russia in 2018.

The coincidence repeats itself in 2026. Eight years after the last World Cup title for a Barça player, the club once again has eight representatives in a final. Joan García, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Pedri, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Ferran Torres will attempt this Sunday to join the exclusive club that Romário inaugurated 32 years ago.

To achieve this, they will have to defeat Argentina, the current world champions, led by Leo Messi. And here lies the great paradox. If Spain wins the World Cup, eight "Blaugrana" players will enter the elite club of world champions. Messi, on the other hand, will remain outside of it... at least as a Barça player. The Argentine lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022, but he did so a year and a half after leaving Camp Nou, making him the greatest footballer in the history of the Catalans who never became a world champion while wearing that jersey.
