Balmer Goes to War with NBA Over Historic Penalty: Clippers Set Back Half a Decade, and Worse May Be Coming
As exclusively reported by The New York Times, Balmer and his legal representatives are actively exploring the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit, seeking an immediate injunction to suspend the sanctions imposed by the league commissioner's office.
“The Clippers and Mr. Balmer are still trying to decide how to respond to the NBA's penalties. Among the potential moves they are considering is filing a lawsuit against the league, asking a judge to issue a restraining order,” the American newspaper reported, citing sources close to the investigation.
The situation escalated when an independent investigation determined that the Clippers had circumvented rules by providing Kawhi Leonard with undeclared and illegal contracts through a network of affiliated private companies.
The ensuing sanctions were the harshest ever: the California franchise was stripped of five first-round draft picks between 2029 and 2033, hit with an astronomical $30 million fine, and the club's entire basketball operations will be under direct league supervision for the next five years.
Executive Suspensions and Ongoing Investigation
Beyond the blow to the team's resources, the entire leadership also suffered. Steve Balmer and his top associate, Gillian Zucker, have been banned from basketball for one year, while President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension.
Despite irrefutable evidence and the fierce reaction from NBA officials, the Clippers' owner has vehemently denied all accusations from day one, claiming the process was rigged and that neither he nor the club violated any regulations. It was precisely this reaction and refusal to admit guilt that prompted the league's unprecedented measures.
To make matters worse for the storied franchise, the entire case has transcended sports — the aforementioned scandal and financial irregularities are now officially under investigation by the United States Department of Justice, meaning potential court injunctions are not the only concern weighing on Balmer and his associates.
