Head coach Tony Popovic is aiming for Australia's first-ever knockout stage victory at a World Cup against Egypt in Dallas later today, placing his trust in his young squad for future successes. The Australians have advanced past the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup, with Popovic largely relying on the younger members of his team against USA, Turkey, and Paraguay.
“Of course, we believe the future is bright, and there are many young players who aren't here at this stage but will be in the future,” the coach stated. “I've maintained all along that we wanted to perform well in this group. We've already shown a good level by navigating a very tough group. And we did it through the qualities these lads possess. Tomorrow is another opportunity not to think about the future, but to think about the now, the present. And I'm sure these boys will deliver another very good performance,” Popovic added.
Australia has reached the knockout rounds twice before, only to be defeated by eventual champions – Italy in 2006, and Argentina in Qatar four years ago. “We know how important this match is, and I think all the players are ready. We really need to focus on the moment. History is written after the match, so we need to give our all, whether it's for 90 minutes, extra time, or penalties, to create that history. I expect the match to be even tougher than before because it's a knockout game, and we have great respect for Egypt. But I also feel we can play better, and now we have a chance to do so,” Popovic commented further. The Australians head into the match without Mathew Leckie and Jacob Italiano, who have left the squad due to injury.
