As Maria Sharapova returned to second in the world rankings, Carla Suarez Navarro was rewarded with a career-high spot.

Spain's Suarez Navarro reached the final at the Internazionali d'Italia, going down to Sharapova in the decider in Rome.

But her consistent form has seen her rise to eighth in the world, above Ekaterina Makarova and Andrea Petkovic.

Sharapova moved back above Romanian Simona Halep.

There were no other changes to the WTA Tour's top 10, with Serena Williams still at number one.

Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki, Eugenie Bouchard and Ana Ivanovic sit in spots four through to seven.

In the ATP rankings, Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori jumped into fourth and fifth respectively as Milos Raonic slipped to sixth.

Raonic was a semi-finalist in Rome last year but was unable to try to defend those points due to a foot injury.

Rome champion Novak Djokovic is well clear atop the rankings, ahead of Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Berdych.

Rafael Nadal stayed in seventh.
