Atletico Madrid suffered their fourth consecutive La Liga defeat, falling 3-2 to Elche. This result saw Elche climb out of the relegation zone to 15th place. Across all competitions, Atletico has now recorded six losses in their last seven matches, with their sole victory coming against Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
As anticipated, Diego Simeone rested almost all of his regular starters following the unfortunate Copa del Rey final loss to Real Sociedad, which was decided by penalties. The only exception was Robin Le Normand, who partnered Clement Lenglet in central defense. Youngsters Javier Bonar and Julio Diaz filled the full-back positions, while Jan Oblak returned in goal after recovering from injury. Thiago Almada and Alex Baena started in attack, but both delivered another subpar performance.
Before the break, the "Rojiblancos" offered little in attack, yet managed to score two goals thanks to Nico Gonzalez, who was the only player showing genuine desire and effort. The Argentine opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a brilliant solo run and a one-two pass with former Elche player Rodrigo Mendoza.
