Athletic Bilbao completely outplayed Elche but squandered numerous chances, ultimately settling for a 1-1 draw at San Mamés. This La Liga match, part of the fifth round, saw the Basque side dominate throughout, yet their superiority wasn't enough to secure all three points.
Just a week prior, at the same stadium, Athletic had convincingly defeated Atlético Madrid 3-0, leading local fans to anticipate another victory. However, the Williams brothers and their teammates displayed a lack of precision in front of goal. They unleashed nearly 20 shots, while the visitors took the lead with their very first attempt on target. This occurred in the 50th minute when former Chelsea player Facundo Buonanotte converted a penalty.
The hosts finally equalized in the 79th minute after a shot from Barrenechea led to a scramble, with the ball last touching Iñaki Williams' foot, to whom the goal was ultimately credited.
Athletic now sits on 7 points, while their opponents remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a win, having only managed two draws. In the upcoming midweek fixture, the Bilbao team will travel to face Levante, and Elche will host Real Madrid.
