Athens Erupts: Spectacular Welcome for Željko Obradović in First EuroLeague Match /VIDEO/

Panathinaikos basketball players hosted Paris in the first round of the EuroLeague, marking Željko Obradović's first official game back on the bench of the Athenian giants since his return to the Greek capital this summer after a long 14-year absence.

After more than 14 years, Željko Obradović returned to the helm of Panathinaikos this summer. The legendary coach, who previously led the club to an astonishing 23 trophies across all competitions, made his official comeback tonight at the OAKA Arena (now rebranded as the Telekom Center). He guided his team in their EuroLeague season opener against Paris.

Panathinaikos fans had, of course, already given Obradović a warm welcome during his official presentation and at the "Pavlos Giannakopoulos" pre-season tournament. However, tonight's reception, for the match against the French capital's team, was on an entirely different level; a packed arena greeted him with thunderous applause and fervent chants.

It's worth noting that after this game against Paris, Panathinaikos will play three more European home matches at the OAKA Arena (against ASVEL, Maccabi, and Fenerbahçe). Their first away game won't be until the fifth round, when they travel to Belgrade to face Partizan.

Even though Panathinaikos will be the away team in that match, it won't make much difference for Željko Obradović. There, just like in Athens, he will be greeted with minutes-long, roaring ovations from the crowd. Perhaps even louder.
