Ataman Demands EuroLeague Inspection! Turk Blasts Spaniards: "Disrespectful, They Put Us in a Storage Room"
Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman didn't mince words after his team's tough night in Spain, shifting the focus from the court to the conditions off it.
Despite praising the atmosphere in Valencia, the seasoned coach voiced serious concerns regarding the facilities provided for visiting staff following their 102-84 defeat to Valencia Basket.
"It's been incredible weather in Valencia at this time of year, and the atmosphere and arena are truly fantastic, the best arena I've seen so far," he stated at the post-game press conference.
"But I want to call on the new EuroLeague CEO (Ćusa Buena), who is Spanish and very capable; he's trying to improve the EuroLeague and bring it closer to NBA standards. I think he lives very close, so he can get in his car, and I suggest he checks the locker rooms, that storage room that the Valencia club provides for the coaching staff."
The head coach then clearly articulated his stance, sharply criticizing the coaching facilities and calling for immediate action.
"It's disrespectful to all coaches in the EuroLeague. If you want, you can come and see this storage room. This is the only big surprise for me, so I invite him and suggest he comes here and checks this situation, because the EuroLeague is a very important competition and the image of the EuroLeague is very important, as it is for the coaches," Ataman explained. "Other coaches have complained about this before, but nothing has changed. That's why I'm asking him to get in his car – it's a two, three-hour drive from Barcelona – and check the situation. Maybe it will be better for the teams playing against Valencia in upcoming games."
While these comments garnered attention, the game itself was rather one-sided. Valencia controlled the tempo from the outset, dictating the pace in transition and punishing Panathinaikos with efficient offense. This result saw Panathinaikos drop to a 21-16 record, losing ground in the playoff race. Meanwhile, Valencia improved to 24-13 and remained in contention for the top spot.
The race is still open. Valencia can secure first place if they finish the job against Dubai and if Olympiacos loses to Olimpia Milano in Round 38.
