Aston Villa to Take Legal Action Against Jamie Carragher Over Disparaging Remarks
Aston Villa have announced they will take legal action against Jamie Carragher over comments the club described as "unacceptable insults."
On Friday, the Birmingham club published an official statement on social media, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, accusing Carragher of disrespecting the Premier League outfit and its supporters.
The statement went on to emphasise that the club "will not allow anyone to derail its rise in English and European football."
During an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher drew the ire of Villa fans after suggesting that manager Unai Emery would jump at the chance to take over at Manchester United.
With Michael Carrick's position at United under immense pressure following a disastrous start to the campaign, Carragher claimed that "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
"I’m sure he’d love another crack at a giant of a club," Carragher argued. "There is a pecking order in football, whether you like it or not. Real Madrid, for instance, can take Manchester United's best player, just like they did with Cristiano Ronaldo. In the same way, there are teams below Aston Villa in that hierarchy, and Villa can take their players or managers. So shut the hell up, Aston Villa fans! Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
Carragher, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports and US network CBS, has already responded to the backlash caused by telling Villa supporters to keep quiet.
"It was a tongue-in-cheek response after all the stick I got from Villa fans for saying Emery might fancy the Manchester United job," Carragher wrote on social media. "I hope those clowns also post the clips of me praising Emery and Villa, which I've done for years, including saying how thrilled I was for you winning the Europa League in Istanbul in 2026."
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Carragher further elaborated on his viewpoint.
"I simply believe Unai Emery is the best manager in the Premier League. If you're Manchester United, you have to ask yourself: 'Who is the best coach we could possibly get?' I'm not saying Emery would definitely go. I'm just saying if I were calling the shots, I'd test the water," Carragher explained.
"Certain managers thrive at specific clubs, and Emery is exactly that type. He reminds me of Rafa Benitez. But your ego wouldn't let you accept someone telling you, 'That's your ceiling.' You'd say, 'No, it isn't.' That was my point.
The whole thing just blew out of proportion. In the end, I told them to get lost, which I probably shouldn't have done, but it was meant as a joke because they were constantly bombarding my mentions. I was basically just telling them to get off my feed."
