Arsene Wenger Backs France. Only One Team Could Spoil Their Title Bid, He Says

Arsene Wenger, FIFA's current Chief of Global Football Development, considers France the top favourite to win the 2026 World Cup. However, the former Arsenal manager also highlighted a potential threat to Didier Deschamps' squad.

On Thursday, France defeated Morocco 2-0, securing their spot in the World Cup semi-finals with goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. They now await the winner of the clash between Spain and Belgium.

“France will win the World Cup. I know you’ll say I’m biased because I’m French. But if you analyze the tournament, you see that the train is moving at a certain speed. And you have to be able to jump on that train,” declared Arsene Wenger, identifying the only team he believes can stop his compatriots.

“If there’s any team today capable of beating France, I’d point to Spain. They possess a higher technical level than the French. They are characterized by excellent team play and a footballing culture that no one else in the world currently exhibits.

France is physically stronger, but Spain can overcome them thanks to their technique,” concluded the 76-year-old former manager.

He also commented on the performance of the Asian teams, none of whom managed to advance to the round of 16. He noted that the main issues were insufficient intensity and technical shortcomings compared to the top teams.

“All the Asian teams were eliminated because they couldn't keep up with the pace and intensity of the matches,” assessed Arsene Wenger.
