Argentina has advanced to the World Cup semifinals after a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland. Julián Álvarez emerged as the hero for the "Gauchos" with a stunning long-range strike in the 112th minute, finally breaking the European side's resistance.
Following the final whistle, Argentine fans, both at the stadium in Kansas City and on the streets of Buenos Aires, erupted in euphoria.
"We supported the team when they needed it most," shared Argentine supporter Henry Lopez as he left the stadium. "We suffered more than necessary, but we secured the win, and that's all that matters."
In Buenos Aires, celebrations continued into the early hours of the morning. "We always suffer, but in the end, we prevail," said Daniel Calleghian, who watched the match with crowds of fans in the Argentine capital. "We snatched victory at the last moment, but we did it, just like in the previous match, and this one, and as it will be in the next ones."
On the other side, the disappointment among Swiss fans was palpable, especially concerning a controversial red card decision.
In Wednesday's semifinals in Atlanta, Argentina will face England.
