Local newspaper "Popular" states that emails were sent from the AFA's official accounts, proclaiming: "Argentina did not win. The victory was stolen through corrupt refereeing decisions." Furthermore, information from the federation's website was reportedly disseminated within an Egyptian hacker group, whose members boasted about compromising the Argentine football page.

Argentina eliminated Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16 with a 3-2 victory. The reigning Qatar 2022 champions were trailing 0-2 until the 78th minute, in a match marred by several controversial decisions from French referee François Letexier. Following the game, the Egyptian Football Association lodged an official complaint with FIFA regarding the decisions made by Letexier and his officiating crew.
