Argentina's Hero: The Most Important Goal of My Career

Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez secured Argentina's victory over Switzerland, netting his team's second goal in the 112th minute to make it 2-1. Reflecting on his first goal at the 2026 World Cup, Álvarez was visibly thrilled: “I’m incredibly happy! We kept pushing until the very end, even when things got tough. There’s always a lot of talk, but we need to focus on our own game, on what we do day in and day out. Even with the opponent down to ten men, it wasn't easy at all. We had to give it our all, and then some.”

Álvarez, who will focus on his club future after the tournament, scored with a curling right-footed shot from just outside the left corner of the penalty area, finding the top far corner of the net. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stretched to his absolute limit, but the ball still slipped beyond his reach.

He then spoke about the team's atmosphere: “The team is in a good place; now it’s time to rest and think about the next match. We would have preferred to beat Switzerland earlier than extra time, but we know it’s never easy. There are two more matches left until our big goal, and we’ll be striving for everything.”
