The Argentine national team is set to face England tonight at 10:00 PM Bulgarian time (3:00 PM ET) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, in the second semi-final of the World Cup. This match holds special significance, not only due to the historic rivalry between the two nations, intensified after their quarter-final clash in Mexico '86 following the Falklands War, but also because it represents a chance for redemption for members of the "Albiceleste" coaching staff, who have their own history with the Europeans.

Lionel Scaloni has assembled a coaching team where his key assistants are Pablo Aimar, Walter Samuel, and Roberto Ayala – each with distinct roles, all boasting extensive experience with the national squad. It is precisely for this reason that they were central figures in the last World Cup encounter with the English – at the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, when the team, led by Marcelo Bielsa, suffered a defeat and subsequently exited the tournament in the group stage.

That particular match took place on June 7th at Sapporo Dome in Japan, as part of the second round of Group F. The "Albiceleste" lost 1-0 after a penalty goal from David Beckham just before the end of the first half. On that day, Walter Samuel started in defense and played the entire match, while Aimar came on at halftime, replacing Juan Sebastián Verón.

Ayala, who was one of the leading figures in that squad, unfortunately missed the match due to an injury sustained during warm-ups before the first game against Nigeria. This injury sidelined him for both the African side's match and the clash against the English.
