Mercedes sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli stands on the brink of becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, and the young Italian is already devising some audacious plans for his potential title celebrations.
Enjoying a stellar sophomore campaign, Antonelli arrives at the upcoming United States Grand Prix armed with a commanding 102-point cushion over teammate George Russell at the summit of the 2026 drivers' standings.
With only six rounds remaining, this weekend's race in Austin, Texas, offers Antonelli his first mathematical opportunity to seal the championship. For the title to be decided at Circuit of the Americas, Antonelli must secure victory, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton—who sits third, 111 points back—must place fifth or worse. While an early coronation in Texas remains an outside bet, Antonelli securing the crown feels increasingly like an inevitability.
How does the 20-year-old intend to celebrate if and when he takes the crown? It turns out his schemes involve Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
Throughout the season, Antonelli and his race engineer Peter Bonnington have engaged in an ongoing prank war, trading surprise cake attacks, fire extinguisher blasts, and hot-sauce retaliations—shenanigans that have become a fixture of Mercedes' behind-the-scenes content.
Speaking to The Athletic, Antonelli admitted that Wolff has been off-limits so far, but wrapping up the world championship might just grant him full license to target the team boss.
"That's another level. You need serious balls to pull that off. But first, I have to finish the championship strong and close out this year on a high so I have a solid reason. Then he won't be able to complain too much. But that's definitely next level."
Pranking the team principal certainly carries risks, but there could hardly be a safer moment for Antonelli to get away with it than the day he delivers Mercedes their first drivers' world title since 2020.
