Before yesterday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Andrea Kimi Antonelli had a theoretical chance to clinch the 2026 Formula 1 title as early as the Singapore Grand Prix on October 11th.
However, after the race in Baku, where the Italian lost 15 points from his lead over teammate George Russell, he can no longer secure the championship so early. He will now have to wait until at least the US Grand Prix on October 25th to become champion. To do so, Antonelli will need to extend his lead by 59 points over the next three rounds, which will include a sprint race in Singapore.
Currently, Antonelli and Russell are separated by 66 points, with 208 points still available until the end of the season (200 from eight races and 8 from the Singapore sprint). Simple calculations show that even if Antonelli secures the maximum 58 points in the next two weekends in Malaysia and Singapore, and Russell scores zero, Antonelli would not have a large enough lead to guarantee the world title.
This situation will change in Austin, but Antonelli will need at least one significant slip-up from Russell in the next three rounds to sufficiently increase his advantage. For this reason, the likelihood of the Italian becoming champion on October 25th is also slim, but winning the title in Mexico a week later is a completely realistic goal.
For this to happen, Antonelli will need to add 34 points to his lead over the next four rounds in Malaysia, Singapore, the USA, and Mexico. To win the title in Brazil on November 8th, Antonelli would need to extend his lead by 9 points over five rounds.
