Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expressed his satisfaction with his side's display, believing the Londoners took a step forward in their development with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United. The Spanish tactician labelled the win as a mature performance, particularly after the break when his team established complete control over the contest. However, Alonso stressed that his expectations remain extremely high and that there is still plenty of room for improvement.
"We are pleased. The match had different phases. The first half was evenly matched, and both sides created few clear-cut chances. At half-time, we spoke about keeping control and told ourselves that if we held onto the ball, we would win. It was a mature performance," Alonso said.
"I am very demanding. We can play better. We are taking a step forward, but I still don't know how far away we are from our ultimate goal. My expectations are really high. I am confident that over the final three months of the season, we will be much better," the Spaniard added.
Alonso also reserved praise for Estevao's display, stating that the young Brazilian had fully earned his opportunity. "Estevao did very well. I am delighted for him. He deserved this chance and the opportunity to repay that faith. His performance certainly gives him every reason to come up to me and say, 'Boss, I want to play more minutes,'" concluded the manager.
