Pau Cubarsí, the Spanish national team and Barcelona defender, shared his thoughts on facing Argentine superstar Lionel Messi in the World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0.
“Messi is my idol, and I don’t like seeing him lose. I had never faced him before. When I greeted him in the locker room, I thought, ‘Is this really happening?’,” the young defender recounted.
“Then you step onto the pitch, you work hard, and you try to win. I can say we beat Messi’s team. I’m over the moon with happiness. It’s a huge honor for me to play on the same field as him,” the defender added in an interview with “COPE.”
A video also surfaced on social media showing Spanish national team players celebrating their title win after the final whistle, with Cubarsí clutching his head upon seeing a dejected Messi sitting on the grass.
