Aguirre Lashes Out at FIFA Over Rescheduling: "They Screwed Me Over"

Mexico's national team coach, Javier Aguirre, has voiced strong criticism against FIFA following the six-hour rescheduling of their 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match against England. He described the decision as a "punch to the gut" that has disrupted his team's entire preparation.

The change, prompted by forecasts of thunderstorms in Mexico City, moved the kick-off time. The match was originally set for 6:00 PM local time but is now scheduled for 12:00 PM noon.

Speaking to "Radio Formula," the Mexican coach did not hide his disappointment. "It's true, it feels like a punch to the gut. It changes everything, the entire plan. It's not completely ruined, but almost, because we have to swallow six hours of our planned preparation," Aguirre stated.

The tactician elaborated on how the change impacts the team's routine: "Obviously, we will comply with what FIFA says. I don't like it at all, nor do my players. Of course, meals, afternoon rest, sleep, physiotherapy... everything, absolutely everything. It seems trivial, but it's not."

Aguirre emphasized the logistical complexities involved in preparing for a match of such magnitude. "Today, 60 people are working here so that these 26 lads can go out on the field on Sunday and win the match. It's no small matter; the truth is, the change is quite significant," he added, visibly irritated that he had not been consulted. "I can understand the reasons and arguments, but I wasn't consulted, and yes, I'm quite angry."

When asked if the change offered any advantage to the hosts at the Estadio Azteca, Aguirre was unequivocal: "None, zero, no advantage whatsoever. On the contrary. Ultimately, yes, they screwed me over, but we have no choice but to comply with what FIFA says."

Aguirre: "We have no other thought but to move forward"
