Simple and Complex by Ahmad Abdullah
My dreams are too important not to matter
I am a simple man
I’ll do whatever I can, whenever I can.
You are a complex woman
You do all you can when you can
You say your dreams are too important too
You are unrepentant
To see that my dreams matter too
I have simple dreams
You have complex dreams
I want to call you my wife
But you think I’m a knife
That will cut your dreams short
Because I follow the African ways
That you feel have become obsolete
You can only oppress me
With your empowered voice
You can only compel me
To be left with no choice
To rejoice
For this part of your dream
Remains a part of my dream too
To see the African woman rise
Beyond the stereotype that shackles her
The laws of nature were not written by men
They were written by God.
