It was Cape Verde's day. Facing a Spanish side many label as "Super," but one that, until it fully unleashes its recovered wings – Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, key architects of their European title, played only 19 and 3 minutes respectively – will struggle to live up to that majestic billing. The Blue Sharks dug trenches and erected barricades, behind which they endured and capitalized on the lack of imagination plaguing the Roja players. They did attempt a few forays into attack, but the day was primarily about solidarity and grit, with the evergreen Vozinha delivering a career-defining performance.
It's a fantastic achievement for a debutant nation, one that resonates deeply with us, and which can now legitimately aspire to the Round of 16, provided they maintain focus and organization in their upcoming matches. Without getting carried away.
The Netherlands-Japan match was a beauty, a clash of styles with attack and speed as common denominators. However, I found myself a bit more drawn to Ivory Coast-Ecuador.
The Africans were incredibly strong in the physical aspect of the game, while the South Americans, more strategic and brimming with individual talent, often faltered in crucial moments. It interested me more because a true diamond, Yan Diomande, whom you've probably heard of, was gracing the Philadelphia pitch. And my expectations were not disappointed. At just 19, the Leipzig winger, playing on the right flank this time – a less common position for him – completely dismantled the composure of a defender of Piero Hincapie's quality. He won countless duels right from the start, with an ease and simplicity reminiscent of Michael Olise. Of course, Olise is left-footed, not right, and tends to occupy more central areas than Diomande did this time. But one could be the inverted reflection of the other in a mirror. At least to some extent.
He's another one of those players who doesn't need the World Cup to prove anything, but it's great he's there for us to enjoy watching him. Soon, we'll see him at one of Europe's top clubs, no doubt about it!
