The incumbent governor and his deputy were handed their certificates during a brief event held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja around 5 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
This comes 24 hours after Fintiri was declared winner of the Adamawa State governorship election after a month-long contest.
The election, which was initially held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, failed to produce a clear winner as the governor and his closest challenger and All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, popularly known as Binani, put up a close fight forcing INEC to declare the contest inconclusive.
In the supplementary election held last Saturday, Fintiri, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled a total of 9,337 votes to best Binani's 6,513 votes.
Cumulatively, the governor scored 430,861 votes to defeat the APC candidate who got 398,738 votes.
However, the announcement was preceded by some political intrigues. While the collation of the supplementary election results was still ongoing on Sunday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa Ari, controversially declared Binani as the winner in clear violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Reacting swiftly, INEC cancelled Binani's declaration as the governor-elect and suspended the collation of results.
