2 brothers killed while scrambling for political campaign gifts

Two brothers have been killed in the Ajegunle area of Lagos while scuffling for gifts that were shared by politicians who came to the area to campaign.

According to , the killings happened at the campaign rally of a Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, at Oduduwa and Layinka streets in Ajegunle.

Supporters and residents of the area, who were scrambling for the gift shared by the aids of the Senatorial candidate, were attacked by thugs and hoodlums who wanted the bulk of the gifts.

Two brothers who lived with their parents at Alayabiagba Street, Boundary, Ajegunle, identified simply as Abeeb and Idris, were all killed by the thugs while scrambling for the gifts.

Three other people were shot dead as fight also broke out among the thugs.

According to the report, Abeeb, popularly known as Abere, was shot twice in the belly and died instantly, while his younger brother, Idris, died at a private hospital where he was rushed to.

A shop owner, who identified herself as Ojedokun, told Punch that the hoodlums robbed her goods and shot sporadically continually, during which stray bullets injured several passersby.

“Trouble started when the aspirant began to share out gifts to supporters. He gave out mobile phones, pressing irons, among other things. As people scrambled for those gifts, trouble began. The thugs brought out guns and began to shoot to scare away people. They began to smash bottles on the ground and attack one another. Even the policemen, who accompanied the rally, fled for their lives. Stray bullets hit people. We later heard that about six people were shot dead,” Ojedokun said.

Another resident revealed that the two brothers have been buried at a local cemetery.

It was also reported that a policeman was also shot during the unrest and had been taken to a hospital for treatment.

The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident and also revealed that the police were making efforts to apprehend the “criminals”.

“The police in Ajegunle recovered two corpses, and the Amukoko division recovered another one. The cause of the violence was that some hoodlums again went on a rampage. Intense efforts are ongoing to arrest the perpetrators of the violence,” he assured.
