AMAA 2019: Award founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe says over 700 films were submitted

Founder of AMAA, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe has revealed that over 700 films were submitted for the 15th edition of the movie awards ceremony.

In a media parley on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, Anyiam-Osigwe noted that the 15th edition had 26 different categories and at least 700 movies submitted for possible nominations.

I can’t give you a specific figure but the jury told me that we have over 700 submissions this year. I think over a 100 nominees and 26 different categories. We had some categories that were endowed by some organisations like the NFVCB Best Nigerian Film,” Anyiam-Osigwe told journalists at the parley.

Speaking on the award ceremony, the entertainment executive said the year has been competitive as the continent keeps evolving in filmmaking. 

She said, “15 years of AMAA has been a journey for us. The films keep getting better and the competition keeps getting harder. There is no frontrunner on the continent because the films are all great projects and we are looking at welcoming the world to the 15th edition.”

The award ceremony founder also revealed that Steve Ayorinde returns as the Head of the governing council for the 5th year while Shaibu Husseini returns as the Head , College of Screeners and Asantewa Olatunji remains the Chairman of the Africa Movies Academy Award.

For the 2019 edition of AMAA, a comedian, a broadcaster and an actress have been revealed as co-hosts of the award ceremony. Anyiam-Osigwe disclosed that Funnybone, Kemi Lala Akindoju, and Lorenzo Menakaya will be co-hosting the show, which is scheduled to hold at the Landmark events centre, Lagos, Nigeria.
