The 38-year-old has not played since March after undergoing back surgery, meaning he missed both the Masters and the US Open.

And in the latest rankings released on Monday, Woods - deposed at number one by Adam Scott last month - has been overtaken in fourth place by fellow American Matt Kuchar.

Woods plans to return to action this week at the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland - a tournament that raises money for his charity foundation.

The top three remains unchanged, with Australian Scott leading the way from Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Masters champion Bubba Watson.

Another man to lose a place in the rankings was Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut at the Irish Open last week.

As a result, the Northern Irishman drops to seventh, with Jason Day climbing above him into sixth.

Sergio Garcia, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose make up the remainder of the top 10.
