On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, Times Higher Education World University Rankings released the new ratings for Universities across the world and two Nigerian Universities were among the top 700 in the world

Covenant University rated 636 in the ranking while the first university in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan, ranked 677 on the list. That officially makes the faith-based institution the best university in Nigeria.

But that is not the goal of this institution.

On Monday, October 21, 2013, the founder and Chancellor of the university, David Oyedepo at the institution’s 11th Founder’s Day announced that the university would be among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022.

Oyedepo said the university has the mandate to raise leaders who will change the world.

Also on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the Orientation Programme for New faculty and Senior Non-Teaching Staff of Covenant University, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor AAA Atayero reiterated that the university has a goal to achieve by 2022. The goal was named ‘Vision 10:2022: The ReCiTe Agenda’.

Explaining the meaning of the goal, the VC said: “Research is our responsibility, Citation and Innovation leading to Income, while Teaching is our goal”.

The University is obviously working tirelessly towards this agenda as it rated above UI in terms of teaching, research, citations and Industry income in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Interestingly, within five years of announcing its 1 of 10 in 10 goals, the university has moved from a position of obscurity in the world universities ranking to 1st in Nigeria, 5th in Africa and 636th in the world.

That is a fantastic achievement for a university that was established 16 years ago.

However, Covenant University still has a long way to go if the one of 10 in10 vision must be achieved in the next four years.

2022 is just four years away and the faith-based school is still far from being among top 10 in world universities ranking. The position of the university in the next world ranking will determine whether ‘Vision 10:2022: The ReCiTe Agenda’ is realistic or not.

Will Covenant University become the first Nigerian tertiary institution to on the same category as Havard, Cambridge and Oxford University? Only time will tell.
