Williams' only blip came during an opening game in which she allowed her opponent four break-point chances, before powering through.

Williams credited her opponent for making life difficult, but was thrilled with the victory at a tournament she admires.

"The first game was very important," she said. "I think she played well and I made an error or two, but it wasn't like I played a terrible game. She hit some great shots.

"I like the grass. It's so unique. There's so much history here. I love how everyone's wearing white. I just love the tradition."

Williams, who lost in the fourth round to eventual runner-up Sabine Lisicki 12 months ago, felt that she initially struggled due to a lack of grass-court action in 2013.

"I fell so many times during the match, which was weird but it was probably just a case of getting my bearings," she added on BBC Sport. "I didn't play much grass-court tennis last year. I think I'll be OK."
