Tries to winger Akihito Yamada and New Zealand-born fly-half Male Sa'u lifted Japan - led by former Australia coach Eddie Jones - to their first-ever victory over Italy in the nation's capital.

Japanese full-back Ayumu Goromaru was lethal with the boot, kicking four penalties and registering two conversions as Italy slumped to their ninth consecutive defeat.

Italy had a penalty try and Robert Barbieri crossed over for the line but it mattered as little as the touring side were left searching for their first win since November last year, when they defeated Fiji 37-31.

Fly-half Luciano Orquera kicked a conversion and two penalties for the Italians.
