Web metrics are those things that tell you how much traffic your website is getting. These metrics are used when your business objectives and goals have been well established.

Every business website has a purpose and these metrics can only be used for analysis based on that purpose.

Here are a few basic terms in web metrics:

  • Page views : This is the amount of times your page was requested
  • Unique visitors: They are the amount of individuals who'll visit your website within a particular period of time and are counted only once. These unique visitors are further classified into new and returning visitors. A new visitor is a unique visitor that visits a website for the first time wishing that period of time being analyzed while returning visitors are those unique visitors that make more than one visit using the same device and browser within the period being analyzed.
  • Page: This is one unit of content
  • Visits or sessions: It is an interaction a visitor would have with one or more page views on your website within a particular period of time.
  • Hit: It is the number of files downloaded on your site, these include photos, graphics and anything you can download on a webpage.
