Zvezda vs. Paris (Tip-off at 8 PM CET)
Match Preview
Crvena zvezda Meridianbet's basketball team desperately needs a victory in their final EuroLeague regular season home game. They must defeat Paris in the Arena in front of their home crowd.
The clash in the largest arena in the Balkans tips off at 8 PM.
The Red and Whites are currently in the play-in zone, tied with Monaco for ninth place with a 19-16 record, while Paris sits in 16th with a 14-21 record.
After losing to Partizan in the eternal derby last week, Ognjen Dobrić and his teammates must secure a win against Nadir Hifi and the team from the City of Lights.
That derby loss complicated things for the Red and Whites. With three rounds remaining, they need to beat both Paris and Asvel and hope they won't also require a victory in Madrid against Real next week.
Obradović: How much more about short rotations?
Recently, a major criticism leveled at Crvena zvezda is the perceived lack of sufficient quality options, or rather, that coach Saša Obradović isn't utilizing all players in his rotation, as was the case against Partizan.
I don't understand why the question of short rotations keeps coming up. Our main players play a lot. Who else should I shorten the rotation for? Perhaps we should consider extending it a bit when it comes to the key players. I wouldn't agree that it's a short rotation. I've explained it behind closed doors; it's not easy to explain publicly. You need to be on the inside to truly understand.
Zvezda could celebrate a victory if Jared Butler finds his rhythm, even though the American has been out of sync for weeks.
- We've talked a bit, and he's put some pressure on himself. He needs help with information, to be put in a comfortable position. Others are also adapting to his isolation, not letting him play alone. Butler also needs to learn to live with decisions, whether they result in a make or a miss, and not dwell too long on a wrong reaction.
If not Butler, who could step up?
- You can't rely on just one or two players; the whole team needs to be present. We need good passes and good execution; that's how open shots are created, and you have to make them. In our situation, that's even tougher mentally. Every possession and every shot determines our fate.
Željko Drčelić's Appeal
Due to the significance of the match and the general need to draw the attention of the Zvezda public, the club's president, Željko Drčelić, issued a statement.
Dear Zvezda fans, a very important EuroLeague game lies ahead, perhaps a crucial one for our aspirations and ambitions in this competition. Our team needs strong and loud support, and unity from all Crvena zvezda fans against Paris. On this occasion, I appeal to everyone attending the arena to cheer fairly, sportingly, and correctly, not to throw any objects onto the court, not to insult anyone, but to direct all their energy towards our team and help them achieve a vital victory! Only when we are all united can we provide the team with true support, and such a tailwind, support, and atmosphere when we are as one – no one else has it. We face a new EuroLeague penalty, the possibility of the arena being emptied and games being played in front of partially empty stands, which negates everything we all do together and spoils the image we have been sending to Europe and the world for months, an image many envy. Zvezda fans, let's show why we are Crvena Zvezda – one and only. Statement by Željko Drčelić
