Switzerland's head coach, Murat Yakin, has voiced concerns over the fitness of three key players ahead of their World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash against Colombia. The match is scheduled for tonight at 11:00 PM Bulgarian time in Vancouver.
Forwards Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas, along with midfielder Djibril Sow, all cut short the team's final training session. This has raised serious doubts about their full recovery for the crucial encounter against their South American opponents.
"It's worrying that they had to leave training early, as their potential absence would be a significant blow for us. If any of them are unable to play against Colombia, it will become a serious problem," Yakin stated.
"We will wait until kick-off to assess their condition. They've undergone intensive recovery procedures. However, anything can happen in football. We need to be prepared for all eventualities right up to the last moment," he added.
Johan Manzambi has been a standout performer for the "Crusaders" so far in the tournament, contributing three goals and two assists in four matches.
"Johan is an incredibly valuable and important player for the team. He shows growth with every match. He's a player everyone wants to watch... he can play in various positions. He possesses great qualities and potential. We are happy to have him as part of our squad and hope he will be available for Wednesday's match. We will do everything in our power to get him fit," Yakin commented.
Switzerland will be aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, when the country hosted the tournament.
"I'm excited, and I believe all the lads feel the same and are eagerly anticipating the match, as are our supporters. We have a massive game ahead, which will be decided by the big players. I expect a very open contest. If we impose our style, we can put our opponents under serious pressure, but we'll see what happens on the pitch," concluded the Swiss coach.
