Every kick of a blue-painted stone in London guarantees millions will follow. This image aptly describes Chelsea's management and every coach or executive who sets up shop between Stamford Bridge and the Cobham training ground. After all, approximately €1.7 billion has been invested in transfers in just four years since BlueCo acquired the club from Roman Abramovich, with a significant portion of that spending yet to prove its worth.
Given this, it's hardly surprising that any clear-out list will incur losses. And that appears to be the current situation. New manager Xabi Alonso has already made it clear that several players in the squad do not fit into his plans, not only due to the sheer number of players but also because they don't align with his tactical vision.
At least five players earmarked for departure are already known, and their combined cost totals nearly €160 million. It's highly unlikely the Blues will recoup this money. The names are as follows: Filip Jorgensen, the Danish goalkeeper signed from Villarreal in 2024 for €24.5 million; Axel Disasi, the French centre-back acquired from Monaco in 2023 for €45 million; Benoît Badiashile, another French centre-back also bought from Monaco in 2023 for €38 million; Alejandro Garnacho, the Argentine winger deemed surplus to requirements by Ruben Amorim at Man. United and transferred to Chelsea in 2025 for €46 million; and Liam Delap, the forward signed from Ipswich in 2025 for €35.5 million.
These are, for now, the players on their way out, but it's highly probable that more will follow, pushing the total cost of the released players (which is higher than their current market value, as the vast majority have depreciated over time) well beyond €200 million.
Quenda, the Second Most Expensive
The former Real Madrid and Leverkusen coach's strategy is to subtract first and add later. His priority is to reduce a squad that currently boasts 37 players. This isn't a new problem; a year ago, his predecessor Enzo Maresca faced a squad of 43 footballers, though he offloaded 15 in his first few days.
According to the latest reports, the Spanish coach is looking for at least one more full-back, a winger, and a goalkeeper (Diogo Costa is among those desired). He has eight untouchables: Reece James, Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, Colwill, Estêvão, João Pedro and Acheapong.
Perhaps the biggest surprise this transfer window is the relative restraint in spending. Unlike recent years, the most expensive signing so far has been right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Geovany Quenda (Sporting) is currently the second most expensive, in a deal worth €50.7 million.
